Guåhan Sustainable Culture
Educate. Cultivate. Nourish.
August 30, 2023
Guåhan Sustainable Culture (GSC) was recently awarded $98,212 under the Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grant Program by the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS).
The Farm to School Project will provide experiential agriculture education to 5 elementary schools through recurring field trips to GSC’s community garden. The field trips will consist of local agriculture education activities, produce tastings, nutrition lessons, and cooking demonstrations. GSC will work directly with local farmers to procure locally grown produce to provide to students at the field trips.
The Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grant will fund 103 projects across the country. These projects give children the opportunity to learn about nutrition and agriculture through hands-on experience such as planting, water, and harvesting. Many of the projects also provide a pathway for more children to achieve nutrition security. This year, USDA is celebrating its 10th anniversary of the Farm to School Grant Program. Since 2013, the Farm to School Grants have funded more than 1,100 projects across the country.
The grant funding will help in continuing GSC’s mission to educate Guam’s youth about sustainable gardening and local agriculture.
