Fresh Solutions: GSC's Mission to Combat Food Insecurity

March 29, 2024

GSC is proudly partnering with the Guam Department of Agriculture to distribute fresh bags of produce through the Farm to Family Program. The Food Bank stands as a beacon of hope in tackling the island’s pressing food security challenges.

Every Tuesday, we welcome those in need of food assistance to receive a free bag of fresh, locally sourced produce. Every Thursday, the Food Bank journeys to a different village, ensuring that all of Guåhan's residents can benefit from its services. Our AmeriCorps GSC members aid in distribution every week, along with 14 other non-profits and community groups such as WestCare Pacific Islands, Mañe’lu, and Catholic Social Service. Each bag is a vibrant mix of our island’s seasonal harvests, from sweet corn, juicy tomatoes, and crunchy sigidiyas to kangkong, fragrant ginger, and eggplant!

This vital program is a direct response to the food insecurity affecting Guåhan’s residents due to the high cost of groceries. It is estimated that approximately 90% of the food in our grocery stores is imported. Guåhan Sustainable Culture strives for a future where all of Guåhan has access to fresh, healthy, and affordable produce.

Distribution is every Tuesday from 10:30 - 11:30 am, or until supplies run out, at the CHamoru Village Metkao Pavilion.

Mañe'lu, WestCare Pacific Islands, AmeriCorps GSC, and GSC founders Marlyn Oberiano and Michelle Crisostomo assist in the distribution of produce bags at the CHamoru Village Food Bank.

The Food Bank's dedication extends to every village on Guåhan. Featured above are the villages of Assan Ma'ina and Hågat as two of the villages that have benefitted from the Food Bank so far.
