Ina Wellness Collective's Coconut Kids Program

September 18, 2023

Guåhan Sustainable Culture (GSC) recently joined Ina Wellness Collective's Coconut Kids Program to facilitate a fun lesson on coconuts. The Coconut Kids Program gives children ages 10 to 13 years old fun and family-friendly wellness experiences that promote mindfulness. The program aims to strengthen the mind-body connection for its students and provides a safe space to celebrate self-care and self-love.

Elisha Vasques, a GSC staff member who teaches through our Li’l Sprouts Academy program, was the lead facilitator of the lesson. The students learned the life cycle of a coconut, along with the Chamoru terms for each cycle. They also learned how to make coconut milk and how to use a traditional kåmyo to grate coconut. The students enjoyed tasting the freshly grated coconut and coconut water. They played a fun over-under game with the coconuts.

Coconuts are abundant and hold cultural significance here on Guåhan. This lesson encouraged the sustainable practice of making the most of local produce and celebrated the local cultural practices involving coconuts. Biba niyok! 🥥
